What Is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient healing technique which balances the body, mind and spirit. It is a non-invasive treatment which reduces stress, allowing the body to heal itself. In essence, a Reiki treatment has the effect of optimising the body's immune system so that it may cope better with illness and disease. Reiki should be understood to be a "maintenance" therapy rather than as a "cure". Simply put, if the human body is well maintained, the likelihood of disease, depression etc. is reduced.
When a Reiki practitioner places their hands on their client, energy is transferred, sometimes in the form of heat, cold, pulsating or tingling. This is a wonderful therapy to experience, extremely peaceful, calming and very natural. The client may sometimes fall asleep. Treatments may last from one to two hours. The client remains fully clothed. Only the client's shoes are removed. At the end of the treatment, the client will have a sense of deep relaxation and wellbeing.
Dr. Mikao Usui was the founder of modern Reiki as we now know it. He was a practising Buddhist living in Japan in the mid 19th century. He had a keen interest in the healing arts and sciences and a great passion to relieve the suffering of others, especially the sick. It was this drive coupled with his understanding of the human body and mind that led him on his fascinating journey to re-discover Reiki, a simple and effective method of healing.
Today, Reiki has become as well known as other mainstream complimentary therapies such as reflexology, aromatherapy and acupuncture. Reiki is the perfect therapy for stress management.
Our thoughts and emotions carry energy. If we are carrying poor quality energies within ourselves, it is easy for us to become "depressed" and "negative". This in turn leads to a downward spiral of poor health. This will ultimately manifest in our physical and mental bodies.
Remember, the human body has its own disease fighting mechanism - it is called the immune system. Reiki practised properly enhances the immune system's ability to fight off dis-ease. Reiki assists the body to purify itself, resulting in improved functionality of all the organs. It effectively clears blockages. Reiki also has a very positive effect on the endocrine system.
However, Reiki is not a quick fix, but rather a long-term route to good health and better quality of life. Thus regular treatments are encouraged.
After the initial treatment, it is recommended to receive a course of a least four treatments. These should ideally be spaced 3-4 days apart for maximum benefit. Thereafter, depending on the severity of the condition being treated, either a twice monthly or monthly "maintenance programme" is suggested.
